O’Brien hosted the Oscars for the first time on Sunday and made quite the entrance.
The 97th Academy Awards started off with a movie montage in tribute to Los Angeles after the devastating wildfires, followed by a trio of musical numbers: first, “Wicked” star Ariana Grande sang “Over the Rainbow,” then her costar Cynthia Erivo performed “Home” from “The Wiz.” Then the two transitioned into “Defying Gravity” from their hit movie musical.
After the performances, O’Brien finally showed up — emerging from Demi Moore’s split-open back in a skit spoofing her film “The Substance.”
The comedian may have been making his Oscars hosting debut, but he’s no stranger to awards shows. O’Brien previously hosted the Emmys twice — first in 2002, then again in 2006.
In an interview with The New York Times ahead of the Oscars, O’Brien revealed that “nothing’s in stone” and he was prepared for pivots.
“I’m leaving every possibility on the table. I have choices right now, and we’ll see what happens,” he said.
