OpenAI’s chatbot has been the most downloaded app across the Google Play and iOS App Store from March through September of this year, according to data from the mobile app analytics tool Appfigures.
Year-to-date, ChatGPT’s app has been downloaded an estimated 410.8 million times globally.
The number far outpaces the estimated downloads of other AI apps, according to data the mobile app analytics platform shared with BI.
- Google’s Gemini: 131.1 million downloads
- DeepSeek: 79.2 million downloads
- Grok: 46.6 million downloads
- Perplexity: 43.1 million downloads
- Meta AI: 16.9 million downloads
Those figures are pretty stunning, but they make sense when you factor in the wild speed of ChatGPT adoption around the world.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT had 800 million active weekly users when speaking at the company’s DevDay conference on Monday. That’s more than 10% of the world population, Harvard, Duke, and OpenAI researchers concluded in a recent paper.
The platform processed over 2.5 billion messages a day as of July, the paper added, equivalent to 29,000 messages per second.
