Jacob Coxon, the former Anthropic AI researcher who sparked the renewed debate over AI safety, resigned from Anthropic on Tuesday after three years of conducting pre-training research.

“Neither company is acting responsibly,” Coxon wrote on X in the announcement for his resignation. “They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”

Coxon, who previously worked on GPT-4o at OpenAI, said AI leaders privately fear the technology could be catastrophic.

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” Coxon added. “At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first — they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk.”
