Sick days hit different when you’re the face of a brand.
Ryan Peterman, the host of “The Peterman Pod,” said a bout of illness almost ground his new independent career as a tech podcaster to a halt. In a six-minute YouTube video posted Friday, the former Meta engineer said he was bedridden for several days with what felt like a strong flu.
The illness exposed a weakness.
“If I stopped, everything stopped,” he said. “Because I couldn’t work, suddenly, everything felt fragile for the first time.”
Peterman worked at Meta as a software engineer from 2018 until February 2026, according to his LinkedIn. He said he set aside six months of savings after leaving the company to give the podcast a real shot. Four months in, the show had not made any money. Then he said he got sick.
He said there was a bit of a silver lining to the illness: Getting sick made him reassess what was not working. He began taking sponsors more seriously and simplified his recording process so he could produce two episodes a week and build a cushion. Cursor and WorkOS later signed on as sponsors, he said.
Roughly nine months after striking out on his own, Peterman said his podcast now sustains itself. His YouTube channel has over 109,000 subscribers.
“My career decision didn’t make sense on paper,” he said, but the goal was not simply to make money. “Otherwise, I would have stayed at Meta.”
Peterman didn’t respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.
