Nearly 80 years of nuclear waste in the US is currently stranded, stuck in “temporary” storage sites without a permanent place to go.

These sites are well secured, but have some drawbacks, especially in case of a natural disaster or terrorist attack.

A deep geological repository can address these problems while providing a permanent solution for nuclear waste. Why doesn’t the US have one?

In fact, no one has an operational disposal site for used nuclear fuel yet — but Finland is getting close.
