Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the , and sectors led shares higher while losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the gained 0.52%, while the index climbed 0.11%, and the index declined 0.23%.
The best performers of the session on the were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:), which rose 2.50% or 9.07 points to trade at 371.57 at the close. Meanwhile, 3M Company (NYSE:) added 1.94% or 2.61 points to end at 137.21 and Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:) was up 1.64% or 5.52 points to 341.64 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:), which fell 2.08% or 3.55 points to trade at 167.02 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:) declined 1.32% or 1.33 points to end at 99.65 and Nike Inc (NYSE:) was down 1.26% or 0.91 points to 71.17.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were United Rentals Inc (NYSE:) which rose 5.91% to 729.86, Celanese Corporation (NYSE:) which was up 5.37% to settle at 71.00 and Builders FirstSource Inc (NYSE:) which gained 5.31% to close at 154.25.
The worst performers were Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:) which was down 6.59% to 744.91 in late trade, Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:) which lost 6.34% to settle at 178.08 and Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 4.74% to 143.06 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Evaxion Biotech AS (NASDAQ:) which rose 344.59% to 3.78, H&E Equipment Services Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 105.48% to settle at 90.29 and Firefly Neuroscience Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 65.79% to close at 3.15.
The worst performers were Meiwu Technology Co Ltd (NASDAQ:) which was down 68.33% to 0.95 in late trade, Phio Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:) which lost 45.76% to settle at 3.58 and Mustang Bio Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 35.77% to 0.14 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2050 to 753 and 65 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1826 rose and 1477 declined, while 116 ended unchanged.
Shares in Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:) fell to 52-week lows; losing 6.34% or 12.06 to 178.08. Shares in Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:) fell to 5-year lows; losing 4.74% or 7.12 to 143.06. Shares in Evaxion Biotech AS (NASDAQ:) rose to all time lows; rising 344.59% or 2.93 to 3.78. Shares in H&E Equipment Services Inc (NASDAQ:) rose to all time highs; rising 105.48% or 46.35 to 90.29.
The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.50% to 18.71.
Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.50% or 13.30 to $2,691.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.47% or 0.36 to hit $76.94 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.68% or 0.55 to trade at $80.46 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.61% to 1.03, while USD/JPY rose 0.32% to 157.98.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.71% at 109.03.
